At a Glance

Nosy Be is Madagascar’s most developed tourist island — and the country’s undisputed highlight for marine wildlife and beach life. A 320 km² volcanic island off the northwest coast, with world-class snorkeling, humpback whale encounters, and a genuinely relaxed pace.

Why Nosy Be Belongs on Your Itinerary

  • Humpback whales (July–September) — The Mozambique Channel is a primary humpback breeding ground. Hundreds of whales, some of the best encounters in the Indian Ocean.
  • Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve — Resident green sea turtles, reef sharks, and dense coral. Best-preserved reef in the region, accessible by boat from Hell-Ville harbor.
  • Island hopping — Nosy Komba (semi-wild black lemurs), Nosy Iranja (twin islands connected by a sandbar at low tide), and smaller islets within day-trip range.
  • Scale — Small enough to explore fully in 3–5 days, developed enough to be comfortable.
