Isalo National Park is Madagascar’s most visited national park — and its most visually dramatic. Sandstone massifs, deep canyons, natural swimming pools, and ring-tailed lemurs that approach willingly on the canyon floor.
Why Isalo Is Worth the Drive
- Landscape unlike anywhere else — Sandstone formations eroded over millions of years into canyons, arches, and isolated towers. At sunset, the rock face turns orange and red.
- Accessible wildlife — Ring-tailed lemurs in the canyon are semi-habituated. They approach hikers, especially at the Piscine Naturelle. Sifakas, red-fronted brown lemurs, and 100+ bird species are also resident.
- The natural pools — The Piscine Naturelle (turquoise, 4–5 hour hike) and Piscine des Nymphéas (black-water, further in) are among the most-photographed spots in Madagascar.
- Manageable hiking — The main circuit is achievable without specialist gear, though footwear with real grip is essential.

Entry and Guides
Park entry fee and a mandatory local guide are both paid at the Ranohira park office. Guides are knowledgeable about trail conditions and wildlife. In peak season (July–September), book guides in advance as they fill up.
Best Time to Visit
April–November (dry season) — trails are accessible, wildlife is visible, and days are clear. Avoid January–February when flash floods can make canyon hiking dangerous.
Where to Stay
Ranohira has lodges and guesthouses at various price points. Book in advance for July–September.
Travel Insurance
Isalo is remote. A twisted ankle on a canyon trail means a long vehicle ride to the nearest hospital. SafetyWing travel insurance covers emergency medical evacuation.
