The Avenue of the Baobabs near Morondava is Madagascar’s most photographed landscape. Ancient baobab trees — some over 800 years old — line both sides of a dirt road for 250 meters. At sunset, the sky turns orange and the silhouettes are extraordinary.
The Avenue of the Baobabs: What to Know
- Location: 17 km north of Morondava town on the road toward Belon’i Tsiribihina. It is a public road — access is free.
- Best time of day: Sunrise or sunset. Harsh midday light reduces the visual impact significantly.
- Best season: Accessible year-round, but the road to Morondava can be difficult in the rainy season (December–March). Dry season (April–November) is strongly preferred.
- Peak crowd season: July–September. Arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset to secure your position. Local vendors sell drinks and crafts.
