Why Madagascar is unlike anywhere else
Madagascar has been isolated from other landmasses for 88 million years. The result: around 90% of its wildlife exists nowhere else on Earth — 100+ species of lemur, 60% of the world’s chameleon species, 300+ frogs, and an Avenue of ancient baobabs that looks like another planet. Before you go: essential checklist
Visa & entry
- Most nationalities get a visa on arrival for up to 30 days (extendable up to 90).
- Bring USD cash — park fees and many lodges are quoted in USD.
- Always check current requirements with the Madagascar embassy for your country before you fly.
Vaccinations (arrange 4–6 weeks ahead)
Discuss Hepatitis A & B, typhoid, yellow fever (if arriving from a risk country), a tetanus booster, and anti-malarial medication (Malarone or doxycycline) with a travel-health clinic.
Travel insurance — do not skip this
Medical evacuation from Madagascar to South Africa or France costs $30,000–$80,000, and serious care is limited outside Antananarivo. Get a policy that covers emergency evacuation, trip cancellation and adventure activities.

Flights
Antananarivo (TNR) is the main gateway, served by Air France (via Paris), Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul, often cheapest), Kenya Airways (via Nairobi) and Air Austral (via Réunion/Mauritius). Book early — flights sell out months ahead in peak season (June–October).
Flight delayed or cancelled? Flights to Madagascar often connect through Paris or Nairobi. If your connection was delayed, EU regulation EC 261 may entitle you to up to €600.

Getting around
Madagascar has no reliable public transit, so most independent travellers hire a 4WD with a driver for the RN7 route. Compare 4WD rentals in Antananarivo on Carla — book at least a week ahead in peak season.
Money
Bring USD or EUR cash and exchange in Tana; ATMs exist in larger towns but are unreliable. Budget roughly $40–60/day (budget), $80–150/day (mid-range), or $200+/day (luxury lodges).

The 10-day itinerary
A flexible framework — roads are rough, so don’t over-schedule.
- Days 1–2 · Antananarivo: arrive, exchange money, explore the Haute Ville, Rova palace and Analakely market. Browse Antananarivo hotels on Agoda — the capital books out around flight-arrival days.
- Days 3–4 · Andasibe-Mantadia: 3h east of Tana; hear the indri, the world’s largest lemur, and take a night walk for chameleons and mouse lemurs. Book an Andasibe guided walk on GetYourGuide.
- Day 5 · Toward Ranomafana: drive south (break in Ambositra for woodcraft) or fly Tana → Fianarantsoa.
- Day 6 · Ranomafana: UNESCO rainforest — golden bamboo lemurs found only here, plus a night walk for aye-aye. Reserve a Ranomafana tour.
- Day 7 · Isalo: red sandstone canyons, natural swimming pools and ring-tailed lemurs. Madagascar’s most-visited park — book lodges early.
- Day 8 · To the coast: continue to Toliara or fly to Nosy Be for the Indian Ocean finish.

Packing essentials
Lightweight long sleeves and trousers (parks + mosquitoes), a rain jacket, hiking shoes with grip, a swimsuit, and a headlamp for frequent power cuts. Don’t forget:
